Daily Update

The Daily Update:

First day on the Job: March 4, 2013

Today was an awesome day! I got to observe and also help teach 5th,4th,3rd,2nd, and kinder gardeners. we started our Gymnastics unit today and we will continue until the end of the week. nothing really too big but overall I got to teach students how to do the different positions at each station such at the T stand where you spread your arms out or the shoulder stand were you get on your shoulders and put your hands on your hip to help keep your feet in the air. can't wait for tomorrow and teach some new things!

Second Day!: March 5, 2013

Today was a great day! Today before our first class i got to work with a new kid to our school, well actually, this is his first time every being in a school which his first day was yesterday! Anyway, he came in and knowing by his behavior of not being able to form words or even know how to sound out a letter written on a paper that he was going to need some help. Now he did have a teacher with him the whole time i just got to interact with him today and got him to say basketball!!! After about 15 minutes of play time we had our first class being the 5th graders as we continued our gymnastics unit and doing different stretches and jumping forms such as jumping in the air and forming a star then landing in the S-form with your arms straight out and your knees bent slightly. We did this with the 4th graders as well. for the K-3rd graders we had them jog around the room and then stand on a rubber circle that my mentor and I had put around the room and continued to do different stretches with them. I also got to teach a couple stretches to get used to the feel of teaching the children. Also, tomorrow, my mentor is going to be gone so I help the substitute teacher with teaching and might even get to teach a few classes! That's it, hope everyone is having a great week! :)

Day Three: March 6, 2013

Today we had a substitute teacher who was pretty cool and I had the opportunity to teach some classes but i left it to the Sub. To do the teaching since I'm still trying to get a-hang of the teaching skills I want to use. During our 3rd grade class we found that one of the air vents which is roughly 3-4 feet in diameter hanging form the ceiling by a wire. The substitute teacher and I set up some cones to prevent the kids from running underneath it. But for all the classes, were ending our gymnastics unit and moving in to some sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, and Soccer. That's it for today. Hope everyone is having a great week!

In-teacher Day: March 7, 2013

Today I got to the school and found that I had made a few errors yesterday such as leaving the cones out and the table with the radio and Ipod touch out which could have gotten stolen, luckily, they didn't. Despite my errors, I had a really good day. I got to teach the 2nd grade class while my mentor watched and took notes about things that went good, and things I could improve on. Overall i had a bunch of good things such as getting the kids to do what I told them by saying GO! As well as a few other things such as helping the kids do the activity correctly and having the students pick an activity card and performing what was on the card for the class. I also had some refinements like facing the class so everyone can hear you and making kids sit out when their not behaving and being disruptive to the class while I was trying to teach. Overall, I would say that it was a great day and my mentor also got some good ideas from my teaching style so that was pretty exciting! that's it for today, hope everyone has a great rest of the week and weekend!

Outdoor ED day: March 8, 2013

Today we had a shorter class period because every Friday we do outdoor education with the 5th graders teaching them about orientation and how to read a road map, city map, etc. Then have kids to kids with the 4th graders where groups of 2 4th graders get with one special needs kid. for example, we have this kid names Saxton and his first day of school ever was my first day of my internship, so 2 fourth graders get together and work with him and a teacher to help them do activities such as weight lifting, and rolling around on a scooter like Superman. aside from the 4th and 5th graders, i got the teach the k-2nd graders today because my mentor had to go to a track meet at DHS. I got to teach each class about gymnastics as we continue it and i was given a great job by the substitute teacher! today was a great day, hope you guys have a great weekend!

RUN KIDS RUN!: March 11, 2013

Today we did the Pacer tests with the 4th and 5th graders where they have to run 14 meters back and forth and we play a tape that beeps at a slow pace to allow the kids to get to the other side, but the tape has different levels and each level, the beeps get quicker and quicker. after the Pacer tests we had the kids do the push up test which is the concept where the push ups get faster as you go up in levels. afterwards we played run for your life where 1 team gets jerseys and the other teams have to hit the people with jerseys with dodge balls, but when you have the ball your not allowed to move. for the k-3rd graders we did ultimate games which are hocker ball, like speed ball, you have to play soccer but you can catch it in the air and toss it in the goal. We also have viking ball were you can run but when you get tagged, you have to stop and toss the football to your teammates to get a touchdown, and finally, hoola ball. this activity you have to pass it 3 times to different people on your team and your not allowed to move with the ball. after making 3 passes, one teammate must pick up a hoola hoop and you have to throw the ball through it. well, that's it! have a great rest of the week!

Pace yourselves: March 12, 2013

Today we continued the pacer with the 4th and 5th graders and also played the dodge ball game and then continued the same games with the k-3rd graders. so, nothing new today. hope everyone is having a great day!

End of Pacer day: March 13, 2013

Today was the last day of the pacer test and everything was the same today so nothing new, don't know what were doing tomorrow but i hope it's fun!

Exercise day!: March 14, 2013

Today we did a lot of body work outs where we had the 4th and 5th graders working out their abs, arms, legs, and calfs. then we played the ulitmate games with them and for the 3rd graders we played the ultimate games but i came up with 2 new games, one was our warm up game where 2 teams stand behind boundries and one team stands on the end. the game is called rat highway, the objective is the rat has the cheese, that would the the team on the side and the rat has to get across the street without getting hit by a car, which would be the dodge balls, and once one rat gets hit the next rat in line runs across and grabs the cheese from the previous rat and get as far as they can. Now the catch is that you can only hit the rat when they have the cheese. and when they get hit, the rat must sit down. the other game i came up with that we played was bacon ball, same concept as hoola ball except you have to sit to catch the bacon, and you have to stand to throw it. the defenders must sit down in order to block it and catchers and blockers are allowed to move around even after sitting down. to get points, there is a hoola hoop set on the ground with a radius of 5-8 feet. when the bacon passes the radius of the hoola hoop, it must be fully inside the hoop for the team to get a point, but regardless if it gets in the hoop or not, the other team gets the bacon, there's no second tries until they get the bacon again. Finally, with the k-2nd graders, we did a bunch of activities revolving the big parachute like sharks and minnows and tossing foam balls up in the air using different techniques with the parachute. that's it for today, hope everyone is having a great week!

Kids to Kids: March 15, 2013

Today if Friday! That means we got to do kids to kids with the 4th and 5th graders as well as outdoor education with a separate class of 4th graders. Today we had the 4th graders use a compass to go to various locations around the playground and for the kids to kids activities we had fun with the big parachute!!! the k-3rd graders played with the parachute again and it ended up being a really good day overall! hope you're all having a great week and have a good weekend!

Exercise Day: March 18, 2013

Today we had the 4th and 5th graders do some fitness exercises such as lifting weight above your head and doing ski jumps on little boxes etc. the 3rd graders continued the ultimate games and with our k-2nd graders we continued the parachute activities and i even got to teach part of the 2nd grade class.

Fitness!: March 19, 2013

Today was very similar to yesterday with the 4th and 5th graders doing the fitness exercises but then they got to play the ultimate games. I introduced a new game to the 3rd graders called Giants, Wizards and Knights. in this game, Giants beat Wizards, Wizards beat Knights, and Knights beat Giants. We split the kids into 2 groups and had them stand on each side of the court, the 2 groups then had to come up with which character they wanted to be and then stood silently in the middle. When both groups are in the middle you tell them to show their character and whoever beats the other team has to chase that team and tag their players before they can get back to their side of the court. Then we had them play Run for Your Life which we played with the 4th and 5th graders when they were doing their fitness testing. Finally, we played a game with the k-2nd graders where you have yellow, blue, and green cones set out with an exercise next to it, once a kid get hit with that color noodle, they have to then do the exercise before they can run again. then we did a bunch of dribbling exercises having the kids spin the ball around their bodies on the floor and at their waist, etc. Have a great week!

Game Creator: March 20, 2013

Today the 4th and 5th graders continued the fitness exercises and then each group had 10 minutes to come up with a game and present it to the class. If it was a good game we would have the whole class play the game before class ended, if there were no good games, then we would have the kids play a different game if there was enough time. The 3rd graders played Giants, Wizards and Knights again and also played Run for Your Life as well. We continued with our small game and dribbling practice with our k-2nd graders and overall was a really good day. Tomorrow i am teaching the 1st graders for a whole class period instead of for part of one. Hope everyone is having a great week!

Teacher Day: March 21, 2013

Today was the same as what we did yesterday and i got to teach the 1st grade class today! My mentor gave me a thumbs up but there was still some stuff that i could work on such as facing the kids when I'm talking to them and doing a better job of challenging the kids with the dribbling activities. Other than that I did a really good job and my mentor was very proud of me!

Last Day!: March 22nd, 2013

Today was the same as yesterday except I taught the 3rd graders, 2nd graders and 1st graders. My mentor took a video of me teaching the 2nd graders so i could get down what I wanted to do with the 1st graders. The 3rd grade class was fun to teach because my mentor and I got to run for our lives and have some fun as well. Well, today was my last day and I am going to miss being at River View and hopefully some day I will get to go back and have some more fun with the kids! hope everyone had a great time at their internships! can't wait to hear about them all!
