For my internship I am going to be working in the PE class at Riverview elementary school. The work done at my internship site is physical education meaning the teacher has the kids do activities that requires them to move around and get physically fit while having fun. I'm not sure what my goal is going to be for my internship but my hope is to be able to teach a lesson/get to teach a full unit. What the PE class is meant for is to get kids to do activities that will get them to be more physically fit while having fun playing games. This is helpful in the community because while in PE class, the kids learn how to be a good sport which leads into them meeting other kids having learned to be a good sport and being nice to others.

My mentor, Johnny Bertrand has been a P.E. teacher for a long time being my P.E. teacher and basketball coach in 8th grade. It’s been 4-5 years since then and he has moved on to teach younger kids at our local Riverview Elementary School. What he does is he gets kids physically fit as I have mentioned before and he challenges the kids to do the best they can while following directions. He makes sure that the kids stay focused and at the end of the class he asks them what it means to be a leader or something relating to the activity they did that class. For example, the day I went in to observe they played hockey and he had them do activities that forced them to take on a leadership role throughout playing hockey. Toward the end of class he got the kids gathered up in a circle and told them to find a partner and think of a leader in our world today and what qualities do they have that make them good leaders. I feel Johnny can offer me all the necessary skills it takes to be a god leader and what it takes to teach kids/young adults. I can also offer him whatever help I can give and a positive attitude throughout the internship as well as ideas on what he could possibly do for his lessons as he continues to grow as a teacher and possible mentor for future interns that may want to intern with him.

I came to find my Mentor Johnny Bertrand because after my internship at Inferno fell through I had met with my Link Internship Coordinator about other possible interests I have and when I heard Johnny’s name I instantly thought that it would be a great idea since he was my Basketball coach in 8th grade. I chose to work with Johnny Bertrand because I would really like to get some coaching skills since I want to work on becoming a coach for any kind of sport. I feel that this experience will really help me grasp ahold of what it means to be a coach and what skills you need to be one. I also know that it will help me become more of a leader seeing you have to take leadership in this position to be able to give orders to your team and be able to control them enough where they will listen to the instructions you give them.

My project entails getting to know the kids names and learning how to teach them where I can have their focus for the whole day. I also am able to teach a couple classes to get familiar with teaching styles that gets the kids engaged in the activities. Getting to help Johnny really helps because I also get to help him organize classes and what to do for those classes. This is really going to help me in the future because I really want to be a sports coach such as a basketball coach or a football coach. As I have said before, this internship opportunity is great because Johnny was my basketball coach back in 8th grade as well as my P.E. teacher so he has some of the experience it takes to be a coach.

For my internship I haven’t really had to do any research at all. I have worked with kids in the past and I am currently working with kids in our church’s Sunday school. I was an assistant football coach for a kid’s camp we had at our church in 2009. Other than that my internship didn’t really take any preparation.

A couple things I will do in order to successfully complete my project during my internship is that I will teach a couple classes after being taught by my mentor so that I can learn some tricks to keep the kids focused on what the activity is. I am also thinking about setting a week aside during my internship to teach the kids and make a 1 week plan for a lesson series kind of thing to get the kids thinking about leadership or what is doing the right thing.
